Sneakers: A Fashion Disruption
Riddle me this. What has been around since the early 1900’s but has boldly taken a seat at the fashion round table? Would you have guessed SNEAKERS?! In the famous words of the Notorious B.I.G., “And if you don’t know now you know!” Who could have predicted that something that once restricted to athletics is now gracing runways?
When did the sneaker begin its rise up the fashion ladder to become a wardrobe must-have? To see its ascension to the top, let’s take a stroll down memory lane. It all began when Chuck Taylor gave his input to Converse sneakers in in the early 1900s. We were then introduced to the Chuck Taylor Converse. Who would have known that this casual sneaker would become a favorite for proms and even weddings!?
In the 1970s, a sneaker renaissance occurred. The ‘Me Generation’ was then graced with the Nike Cortez sneakers. This shoe began as a track and field performance sneaker but has evolved as a iconic wardrobe staple. This sneaker is so popular that Bella Hadid channeled her Farrah Fawcett as part of the shoe’s 45 anniversary ad campaign.
As sneakers continued to gain traction, Gucci threw its laces into the sneakers arena. In 1984, Gucci became the 1st luxury brand to release a tennis shoe that sported its signature green and red stripes. Later Prada started a trend for high-end designer sneakers. Prada’s debut shifted the sneaker design from an athletic purpose to an expression of style. This move opened the door for other fashion designers like Louis Vuitton and Christian Louboutin.
If you look around, you will notice that sneakers are a common fixture on runways and during fashion week. Sneakers have become a wardrobe must-have. Not only are they comfortable, they can make wide leg trousers pop or be the perfect accessory for a sundress.
All of my close friends know that sneakers are a major part of my wardrobe. I have a sneaker for almost any occasion. I have glitter sneakers, sequin sneakers and of course casual sneakers. To me, nothing says business casual like a dark denim skirt paired with a cute top and some classic Pumas. And weekend brunches will always include a pair or Air Max.
For those of you that aren’t a fan of sneakers, I challenge you to give them a try. If you aren’t sure where to start, I recommend getting a pair of Stan Smith Adidas or a pair of Chuck Taylor Converse. They are casual and are a compliment to almost any outfit.
